Types of Diabetes

March 29, 2023

Diabetes is a condition wherein there is too much glucose in the blood. This happens when the body cannot produce enough insulin, or cannot properly use the insulin that is produced. The body is then unable to get sugar from the blood into your cells, leading to high blood sugar levels.

Understanding Type 1

Type 1 diabetics do not produce any insulin. Type 1 diabetes is believed to be an autoimmune disease that occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing (beta) cells in the pancreas.

Symptoms can include excessive thirst and urination, sudden and unexplained weight loss, weakness, fatigue, extreme hunger, irritability, and blurred vision.

Understanding Type 2

This is the most common form of diabetes. In Type 2 diabetes, your body does not use the insulin properly and efficiently, which then causes the pancreas to make more insulin until it cannot keep up with the demand.

Symptoms can include excessive thirst and urination, sudden and unexplained weight loss, weakness, fatigue, extreme hunger, irritability, blurred vision, frequent infections, and there may be areas of darkened skin.

Understanding Gestational Diabetes

This type of diabetes is caused by insulin-blocking hormones that are produced during pregnancy.

Women with gestational diabetes can still have a baby, however, it is crucial that the diabetes is managed to reduce the risk of developing complications. Having gestational diabetes does not necessarily mean that the baby will be born with diabetes, but it can increase the risk of the baby developing Type 2 diabetes later on.
