Dos and Don’ts in Storing Your Medications at Home

You might think that your medicines are stored properly in your home, but there are some things you haven’t taken into consideration. Here are some dos and don’ts of the best storage practice to ensure your medications are safe at home and it’s in the correct place. 

Do’s 

  • After purchasing the medications, store them in a cool & dry place. 
  • Always keep them inside the original packaging 
  • To avoid damaging the substance, always close the container
  • Check for expiration date and dispose of the expired medications properly 
  • Clear any cotton balls placed inside the bottles to avoid moisture buildup 
  • The fridge should be set at the right temperature if you have medications stored in it
  • Ensure it is not within the reach of children or pets. Put it in a high and safe storage 
  • Liquid medications should be in the fridge like syrups and suspensions

Don’ts 

  • Don’t expose medications to extreme temperatures or direct sun exposure 
  • Don’t use expired medicines 
  • Do not use pills that show any change in discoloration even if it is not yet expired
  • Do not flush the medications in the toilet
  • Do not leave it unattended especially if you have pets or kids at home 
  • Do not try to eat the silica packs placed inside the bottles
  • Don’t place it above the fridge or cooktop
  • Do not store it in the bathroom cabinet due to heat and humidity

In case of Emergency

Call your poison control center in case your child accidentally ingests a medication. Save the poison help number into your home and cell phone so you will have it during an emergency situation.
