The “good” and the “bad” News About Cholesterol

February 26, 2022

Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in the blood that is made by the liver in order to build cells. But cholesterol levels need to be monitored; having too much in your bloodstream can increase your risk of heart disease. That’s why the team at Green Pharmacy encourages you to have your cholesterol tested, so you can know your levels and make some changes if necessary.

There are two types of cholesterol: LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol), where having too much leads to a harmful buildup of cholesterol in your arteries that feed the heart and brain; HDL cholesterol, (the “good” cholesterol) removes bad cholesterol from where it doesn't belong. High HDL levels reduce your risk for heart disease.

All adults – ages 40 and up – should have their cholesterol tested every three months. Green Pharmacy wants to make it convenient and easy for you to do just that by offering cholesterol screenings administered by our professionally trained staff. We can screen for your total cholesterol level only, or perform a more in-depth screening called total lipid profile that includes total cholesterol level, in addition to HDL and LDL levels, triglycerides and glucose levels as well.

Know your risks…and your numbers

Cholesterol levels are influenced by multiple factors, chief among them, diet. Eating too many foods rich in saturated fats and refined sugars — frequently lead to elevated levels of LDL. Other risk factors include family history, age, kidney disease, diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure and liver disease.

We’re here to help you!

Consider the professionals at Green Pharmacy part of your healthcare team. In addition to cholesterol screenings, we also offer diabetes care and education, and automated kiosks that allow you to track your blood pressure and report it to your doctor.
